Indonesian Gems in Sydney
To be frank, I was blown away by the amount of Indonesian owned cafes and restaurants I found this time in Sydney. I haven’t been back here in probably 8 years and I could just feel the significant increase in the Indonesian population and demand for the food. Some are asking me why did I go all the way to Sydney just to eat Indonesian food? Well that wasn’t the main reason but I’m telling you it’s delicious and you must try! Of course, it’s also very nice to connect with your fellow countrymen and support Indonesian businesses wherever possible. Here were the places I visited and some others worth mentioning:
Aslan Coffee Roasters. I came across this cafe at The Rocks because I saw Nasi Kuning Ayam Geprek and Rendang on their menu. They also have exceptional coffee solely from Indonesia. A must for great Indonesian coffee.
Algorithm Merrickville. This cute little cafe run by Indonesian couple, Baby Angelina Kartiko and Beryl Leomongga, has great food and coffee and preparing to open another branch closer to the CBD. I was blown away by their cold brew topped with vanilla-orange scented cream and desserts.
Medan Ciak. I had the BEST Nasi Padang (complete with Rendang, Singkok and Sambal Hijau) outside of Indonesia and this place just gives you that comfort. A must for Indonesian comfort food.
Some I didn’t get to go to but worth mentioning!
Whitton Eveleigh Restaurant. I walked passed this Indonesian fusion restaurant and saw ‘Nasi Bungkus’ written on their menu board.
KOI Dessert Bar. A luxurious seasonal sweet treats by Indonesian celebrity chefs, the Poernomo brothers.
