My Holiday List 🎄
My favorite time of the year is coming up: Christmas. I love the holidays – a nod to coziness, tradition, and a time filled with excitement, family, celebration, and delicious food. Arguably, these are the most important things in life. It’s also a time of giving and sharing, so I’m elated to share my must-haves and the things I love most this season. I’ve listed my favorite traditions and essentials for the holidays below. Here is a list of what makes Christmas, Christmas to me.
The Heart of the Season is Food
Christmas cakes in Venice, 2018
Panettone
I spent almost four Christmases in Italy, where Panettone is a must at the dinner table. Just like Christmas pudding in other parts of the world, Christmas is simply incomplete without it. Panettone is a sweet, delicate, brioche-like cake. I embraced the tradition of having Panettone every Christmas and can’t do without it since. It feels like having a little piece of Italy with me wherever I am.
I even tried making one when I returned home to Bali—a lengthy process— but the experience was worth it! My favorite Panettone features white chocolate and pistachios or chocolate chips. I used to buy it from Eataly in Florence and was always excited to see the beautifully wrapped packaging. To elevate the experience, I make a delicious Italian chocolate cream for the side.
Mom’s Roast Chicken & Stuffing
There’s nothing quite like Mom’s cooking to bring comfort and warmth to the holiday table. Her roast chicken with stuffing is something we all look forward to every year.
Pavlova & Watermelon Cake, Christmas 2014
Pavlova & Trifle
An Aussie Christmas isn’t complete without Pavlova and Trifle—light, sweet, and refreshing after a big festive meal. These classics are perfect for the summer Christmases I often associate with at home.
Mince Pies
When I’m back in Bali, I make sure to get mince pies from Honeymoon Bakery. They’re buttery, spiced, and just the right size for a festive indulgence.
Homemade Pasta
Bringing another nod to my Italian Christmases, homemade pasta is a labor of love and a staple for my holiday feasts. Fresh, simple, and so satisfying.
Hot Chocolate with Peppermint
A cozy night in (or holiday movie nights) is incomplete without hot chocolate, especially with a swirl of peppermint for that extra festive flavor. It’s a hug in a mug!
Traditions are What Makes the Holidays Magical
Setting up the Christmas Tree
The official start of the holidays begins with decorating the Christmas tree. It’s a ritual that always fills the home with joy and sets the tone for the season.
Checking Out the Christmas Lights
One tradition I really miss is when my grandpa used to drive me around the neighborhood in Melbourne to see all the Christmas decorations after dinner!
Party Poppers & Games
Bonbons(Party Poppers) and games are a must. Whether it’s a classic board game or cards, this tradition brings laughter, playful competitiveness, and time to bond.
Baking Holiday Treats
From cookies to festive cakes, baking fills the house with the smell of spices, butter, and sugar—the ultimate holiday aroma.
Watching Christmas Movies
No Christmas is complete without movie nights. My favorites include:
• Harry Potter (perfectly magical for the season)
• The Grinch (a classic reminder of the spirit of Christmas)
• Love Actually (for all the holiday feels)
• The Polar Express (a timeless favorite)
Christmas Songs & Holiday Playlists
Christmas music instantly lifts the spirit. Some of my go-to artists are Kacey Musgraves and Laufey, who bring a soothing, nostalgic charm to holiday playlists. Check out my Holiday playlist on my Spotify.
Scented Candles & Reading
There’s something magical about curling up with a book and the soft glow of a scented candle. Think notes of cinnamon, pine, and vanilla—pure holiday bliss. Perfect for setting up the vibes!
Christmas Morning
The excitement of waking up on Christmas morning and opening presents is a feeling that never gets old, no matter how many Christmases go by.
Christmas at Home, 2014
Christmas Eve Dinner & Christmas Lunch
A time spent with family and friends at home, sharing laughter, stories, and food around a beautifully set table. It’s the heart of my holiday celebrations. We always spend time together as a family and our home is always open for anyone and everyone <3
Visiting Christmas Markets
Whenever I have the chance, visiting Christmas markets is a must, especially when I used to live in Italy. From twinkling lights to festive stalls offering mulled wine, handmade crafts, and seasonal treats—it’s the perfect way to soak up the holiday magic.
The holiday season is about embracing traditions, savoring special moments with loved ones, and indulging in all the little joys that make this time of year so magical. Whether it’s the taste of Panettone, the warmth of a candle-lit room, or the sound of Christmas music filling the air, these are the things that make Christmas, Christmas to me.
